I don’t there’s anything better than a huge smoothie bowl on a hot morning… and there are going to be many more of those days very soon.
I haven’t always liked the taste of kiwi. I used to think it had a weird texture and it was too much of a hassle to eat. Once I warmed up to grapefruit and got used to scooping the fruit out with a spoon, kiwi was a piece of cake. My favorite ways to eat kiwi include: blending into smoothies and smoothie bowls, sprinkling on top of toast (don’t knock it ’till you try it) and mixing it into Siggi’s blueberry yogurt.
I have to admit, this is not the most glamorous smoothie bowl I’ve made. I typically pile on the toppings like a crazy person and I mix wacky ingredients together. Right now, I’m really into putting frozen cauliflower and frozen zucchini in my smoothies to make them extra thick and full of nutrients. I’ve also been loving hemp seeds and walnuts on top of my smoothie bowls. If you’re wanting to mix up your smoothie bowls a bit, I highly recommend adding a few of these ingredients to the smoothie base:
Avocado
Frozen cauliflower
Frozen zucchini
Unsweetened soy yogurt
Almond butter
I also recommend experimenting with these toppings:
Hemp seeds
Chia seeds
Sunflower seeds
Walnuts
Peanut butter
Raw almonds
Energy bites
Pepitas (roasted pumpkin seeds)
Goji berries
Would you believe that some people haven’t even heard of smoothie bowls? Sometimes I forget that I’m the only foodie in my family and group of friends. It’s always fun, though, to tell people about new food trends and recipe ideas I have. Plus, people always love to be surprised with a taste test.
This is one of the most simple, easy to make smoothie bowls I’ve made, so there’s no reason not to try it. Organic fruit is finally starting to drop in price in Minnesota. I can’t wait for summer when berries are always on sale!
